Ⅰ Note from Mr. Clement A.K. Tsien, Ambassador of the Republic
of China , to H.R.H. Crown Prince Tupouto'a Minister of For-
eign Affairs of the Kingdom of Tonga
CE-1811 June 10, 1982.
The Ambassador of the Republic of China, Mr. Clement A.K. T-
sien, presents his compliments to the Minister of Foreign A-
ffairs of the Kingdom of Tonga, H.R.H. Crown Prince Tupouto'
a, and has the honor, under instructions, to state as follo-
ws:
In view of the fact that the International Convention on To-
nnage Measurement of Ships 1969, signed 1969 May-June in Lo-
ndon, will come into force on June 18, 1982, and further in
view of the fact that although the Republic of China is not
a party to the said Convention, it is nevertheless willing
and has so decided to abide by the provisions of the said C-
onvention, in the interest of international shipping, the G-
overnment of the Republic of China would wish to propose, on
the basis of principles of equality and reciprocity and fur-
ther in view of the friendly relations existion between the
two countries, that the Republic of China and the Kingdom of
Tonga undertake to abide by the provisions of the said Conv-
ention, recognize the validity of the International Tonnage
Certificates issued by the competent authorities of either
Government so as to enable and facilitate the call at the v-
arious international ports by the merchant ships of the Rep-
ublic of China.
If such a proposal as appears hereabove is acceptable to the
Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, then the present Note a-
nd the Note in reply from the Minister confirming such acce-
ptance shall be considered as constituting an agreement bet-
ween our two countries on this matter.
The Ambassador will appreciate it highly if the Minister wi-
ll be good enough to give him a reply as soon as possible.
The Ambassador of the Republic of China avails himself of t-
his opportunity to renew to the Minister of Foreign Affairs
of the Kingdom of Tonga the assurances of his highest consi-
deration.

Ⅱ Note from H.R.H. Crown Prince Tupouto'a Minister of Foreign
Affairs of the Kingdom of Tonga, to Mr. Clement A.K. Tsien,
Ambassador of the Republic of China

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence of Tonga H.R.H.
Crown Prince Tupouto'a presents his compliments to the Amba-
ssador of the Republic of China, Mr. Clement A.K. Tsien and
has the honour to refer to Note Verbale CE-1811 of 10 June 1
982 which reads as follows:-
”In view of the fact that the international Convention on
Tonnage Measurement of Ships 1969, signed 1969 May-June in
London, will come into force on July 18, 1982, and further
in view of the fact that although the Republic of China is
not a party to the said Convention, it is nevertheless will-
ing and has so decided to aside by the provisions of the sa-
id Convention in the interest of international shipping, the
Government of the Republic of China would wish to propse, on
the basis of principles of equality and reciprocity and fur-
ther in view of the friendly relations existing between the
two countries, that the Republic of China and the Kingdom of
Tonga undertake to abide by the provisions of the said Conv-

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence of Tonga has f-
urther the honour to inform the Ambassador of the Republic
of China that His Majesty's Government accepts the aforemen-
tioned proposal and that Note CE-1811 of 10 June, 1982 and
this Note of reply will constitute an agreement between our
two countries on this matter.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence of Tonga avails
himself of this opportunity to renew to the Ambassador of t-
he Republic of China the assurances of his highest consider-
ation.
