THE SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, THE AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AUSTRALIA AND THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, NATIONAL SCIENCE COUNCIL REPUBLIC OF CHINA

The Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Te-
chnological Sciences and Engineering, Australia, and the Nation-
al Foundation for Science and Technology, National Science Coun-
cil, Republic of China, recognize the mutual benefit of scienti-
fic and technological Interchange and the convenience of set pr-
ocedures for Its administration.
Both sides will facilitate cooperation between specialists in t-
he scientific and technological disciplines within their mutual
competence, subject to the laws and regulations in force in the
two countries and subject to the financial limitations of each
side. The form of scientific contacts may include:
(a) Study Visits
Both sides will assist in promoting exchanges of research s-
cientists and technologists of at least postdoctoral or equ-
ivalent level for periods of between one and four weeks for
exploratory visits, subject to a balance being maintained on
each side. These visits will be known as study visits. For
study visits, the sending side will pay international air f-
ares and the host side will pay local costs. To be included
in the study visits are exchange visits between the adminis-
trative staff of the two sides.
(b) Fellowship Visits
Both sides will assist in promoting visits of research scie-
ntists and technologists of at least postdoctoral or equiva-
lent level for periods of up to twelve months, to carry out
research projects or learn new techniques predominantly in
one laboratory or site but with provision for short subsidi-
ary visits to other places. These visits will be known as f-
ellowship visits. The sending side will pay for all the exp-
enses of these visits, both international air fares and loc-
al costs, with the host side helping with the placing of vi-
sitors and the administration of the visit, as may be neces-
sary. The number of fellowship visits from each country will
be the same.
(c) Joint Seminars
Both sides will facilitate the holding of seminars in areas
where the exchange of information promises to improve the l-
evel of cooperation between scientists and technologists of
the two sides. The sending side will pay international air
fares, and the host side will pay local costs.
Matters relating to intellectual property and the level of exch-
ange activity will be agreed upon when funding becomes available
.
